Roughly 50 vehicles have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Automobiles, exterior walls and postboxes were marked, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they stated in a official communication.
Police say they were notified late on Wednesday, when a resident observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued fluid.
The fluid had been drawn in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Police then located many other vandalized vehicles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under regulations outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Officials report preliminary tests suggest the substance was likely human blood.
"Currently there is no clue as to its source; authorities are presently not aware of any injuries in association with the occurrence," they commented.
Municipal representatives said they were working "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the public for information.
A high-ranking official said the vandalism rendered him stunned and required to be solved quickly.
"This incident hits the core of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the far-right attack five years ago," he stated on social media, referring to the death of nine individuals by a gunman targeting residents of foreign heritage in February 2020.
